A Free Bearing

I don't know whether to stay or leave

When staying and leaving both hurt, the mind can move between them without standing still long enough to see either clearly.

This Bearing will not tell you which one to choose.

What may be worth noticing

You may be comparing the reality of staying with the fantasy of leaving—and then the reality of leaving with the fantasy of staying.

A fair comparison needs the same standard on both sides. Look at what is happening, not only what the situation could become at its best or what departure could become at its worst.

It matters whether the problem is difficulty that can genuinely be worked on, or a pattern that keeps asking you to abandon something important in yourself. Hope deserves evidence. Fear deserves examination. Neither should make the decision alone.

One question

If nothing meaningful changed over the next twelve months, what would staying be asking you to accept?

One thing to do

Compare evidence, not promises.

Make two columns: What staying currently costs and What leaving would realistically cost. Use examples from the last three months for the first and practical consequences—not worst-case stories—for the second. Circle the costs that conflict with something you are no longer willing to trade away.

Something to take with you

You do not have to make the decision from the loudest moment.

You do need to be honest about the pattern, not only the exceptions.

A little deeper

Which uncertainty feels more central?

A — I still want this, but not as it is.

Then ask whether change is specific, mutual and visible. Name what would need to change, what action would demonstrate it and how long you are willing to watch for evidence. Wanting something to work is meaningful; it is not evidence that it is working.

B — I may want to leave, but I'm afraid of what follows.

Fear after leaving does not automatically mean leaving is wrong. Turn “what follows” into actual parts: housing, money, contact, loneliness, work, safety. Identify which part needs a plan or professional support. A large fear becomes more workable when it stops being one unnamed future.

What would feel useful now?

Sometimes reading something is enough.

If it isn't, you can bring what is actually happening to a private conversation with Luke.

You don't owe Lighthouse anything for reading this.

If this was enough for tonight, let it be enough.
