Scope and safety

What Lighthouse can — and cannot — help with

Lighthouse gives you a place for honest, non-clinical conversation. Being welcome to talk about something does not mean Lighthouse replaces the professional support that situation may need.

Last updated: 5 September 2026

What Lighthouse offers

Lighthouse offers one-to-one conversations that can help you explore:

  • clarity, reflection, perspective and understanding;
  • patterns and behaviour;
  • relationships and difficult life situations;
  • work, careers, changing jobs and practical decisions;
  • business ideas, building something, money and direction;
  • choices, direction and personal change;
  • the overlap between practical and personal life; and
  • rebuilding after a difficult period.

Luke can listen, question, challenge, reflect, notice patterns and introduce another angle. He does not steer your life for you. Your choices and actions remain yours.

Adults only at launch

Lighthouse is currently for adults aged 18 and over. It does not provide conversations or a safeguarding service for children or young people.

What Lighthouse is not

Luke is not a therapist, psychologist, psychiatrist, doctor, addiction specialist, legal adviser or crisis professional. Lighthouse does not:

  • diagnose or treat mental-health conditions;
  • provide psychotherapy or medical care;
  • manage medication;
  • provide addiction treatment;
  • provide regulated financial advice or investment recommendations;
  • provide legal advice; or
  • provide emergency or crisis intervention.

You are still welcome to bring difficult things

Lighthouse is open to people dealing with addiction, criminal history, prison or re-entry, shame and difficult life experiences. You do not need to make your story presentable before you talk about it, and you will not be reduced to the worst thing you have done.

That welcome does not turn Lighthouse into addiction treatment, rehabilitation, legal support or mental-health care. Those services have different training, responsibilities and protections.

Free Bearings

Free Bearings are general, prewritten and self-guided. They are not tailored to an individual and are not professional advice, therapy, diagnosis, medical care or crisis support. You decide whether and how to use them, and no outcome is guaranteed.

If you need urgent help or specialist professional support, do not rely on a Bearing in place of that help. If you would rather have a human conversation, Lighthouse's paid conversation options remain available when appropriate.

When another service is more appropriate

If something comes up that would be better supported by an appropriate medical, psychological, psychiatric, addiction, safeguarding, legal or other regulated professional service, I’ll say so openly.

Lighthouse may pause, decline or stop work where continuing would be outside scope, unsafe or less useful than appropriate professional support. That is a boundary of the service, not a judgement about you.

Contact between conversations

Existing clients may contact Lighthouse if something significant comes up. Luke responds when reasonably able, but replies are not immediate or guaranteed within a particular time. This is not 24/7 or unlimited messaging support, emergency monitoring or crisis coverage.

Urgent help

If you need help now

Lighthouse is not an emergency service, messages are not continuously monitored, and a booked conversation is not the right route for urgent help.

Immediate danger or emergency

If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 999 or go to A&E now.

Urgent mental-health help or suicidal thoughts

Call NHS 111 and select the mental-health option. You can also read the NHS urgent-help guidance.

Someone to listen, day or night

Call Samaritans free on 116 123, any time, from any phone. You can also visit the Samaritans website.

Outside the UK

Contact your local emergency number or an appropriate crisis service where you are.

If you are unsure before booking

You can use the contact page to ask whether Lighthouse is an appropriate place for the conversation you want to have. Do not use that route for urgent or emergency help.
