A Free Bearing
I've fucked something up
There is a point after a mistake when looking at what happened can turn into repeatedly prosecuting yourself for it.
Responsibility matters. Permanent self-condemnation is not the same thing.
What may be worth noticing
Guilt can point towards repair. Shame often turns the whole person into the offence.
If you only say “I'm terrible,” you never have to be precise about what you did, who it affected, what can be repaired and what must simply be carried. A global verdict feels severe, but it can avoid the harder work of specific responsibility.
You do not need to minimise what happened. You do need to distinguish the consequences that belong to the mistake from the extra punishment you keep adding because suffering feels like proof that you understand it.
One question
What would taking responsibility require if punishing yourself were no longer allowed to count as repair?
One thing to do
Write the situation in three exact lines.
Complete: “What I did was…” “The part I can still repair is…” and “The part I cannot undo but can learn from is…” Keep identity statements out of it. Choose one repair that is appropriate for the person affected—not one designed mainly to relieve your guilt—and decide when you will do it.
Something to take with you
You may have done something you deeply regret.
That fact can ask something of you without being the only true thing about you.
A little deeper
What is hardest to face?
A — There is still something I could repair.
Repair is not the same as securing forgiveness. Make the action about acknowledging impact, changing behaviour or restoring what can reasonably be restored. The other person remains free to respond however they respond. Your responsibility is the honest action, not control of the outcome.
B — I cannot undo or repair it.
Then the work may be to make the regret informative rather than endless. Name the rule you now live by because of what happened and the evidence that would show you are keeping it. The past stays true; it does not have to remain useless.

Sometimes reading something is enough.
If it isn't, you can bring what is actually happening to a private conversation with Luke.
You don't owe Lighthouse anything for reading this.
If this was enough for tonight, let it be enough.
