A Free Bearing

I feel like everyone is ahead of me

Comparison can turn other people's visible milestones into evidence about your entire life.

It can create urgency without giving you direction.

What may be worth noticing

Feeling behind can make two different questions look like one.

“Where do I actually want to go?” and “Why am I not where everybody else seems to be?” are not the same problem. The second question borrows a destination as well as a timetable.

Some dissatisfaction may be genuinely yours. Some may only become unbearable when placed beside somebody else's edited evidence. You need to discover what would still matter if their timeline stopped being the map for yours.

One question

If nobody else your age existed for you to compare yourself with, what would you actually want to change about your life?

One thing to do

Replace milestones with an ordinary week.

Write three things you want more of in a normal week and three things you want less of. Do not include status, age deadlines or how the week would look to anyone else. Choose the smallest change that would move one item in either direction during the next seven days.

Something to take with you

You do not know yet what happens from here.

That is different from there being nowhere to go.

A little deeper

Which feels closer?

A — I genuinely don't like where my life is.

Let the dissatisfaction become specific. Name the one area that most needs movement and what “better” would look like in observable terms three months from now. You are not required to repair your whole timeline. You need one direction that belongs to you.

B — My life may be okay, but I hate where I am compared with others.

Comparison is giving you information about rank, not necessarily fit. Reduce the evidence feed for one week—especially the people or platforms that trigger the scorekeeping—and notice whether your own life feels different when it is not continually placed beside theirs.

What would feel useful now?

Sometimes reading something is enough.

If it isn't, you can bring what is actually happening to a private conversation with Luke.

You don't owe Lighthouse anything for reading this.

If this was enough for tonight, let it be enough.
